The Acropolis of Athens and its monuments are universal symbols of the classical spirit and civilization and form the greatest architectural and artistic complex bequeathed by Greek Antiquity to the world.
In the second half of the fifth century bc, Athens, following the victory against the Persians and the establishment of democracy, took a leading position amongst the other city-states of the ancient world.
Acropolis of Athens !! MadeinMycountry is a global platform that celebrates and supports local history, culture, art, and nature conservation efforts. For two decades, we have been sponsoring local museums, cultural organizations, travel destinations, historical sites and various cultural events around the world.
In the age that followed, as thought and art flourished, an exceptional group of artists put into effect the ambitious plans of Athenian statesman Pericles and, under the inspired guidance of the sculptor Pheidias, transformed the rocky hill into a unique monument of thought and the arts.
The most important monuments were built during that time: the Parthenon, built by Ictinus, the Erechtheon, the Propylaea, the monumental entrance to the Acropolis, designed by Mnesicles and the small temple Athena Nike.

Outstanding Universal Value
The Acropolis of Athens is the most striking and complete ancient Greek monumental complex still existing in our times.
It is situated on a hill of average height (156m) that rises in the basin of Athens. Its overall dimensions are approximately 170 by 350m. The hill is rocky and steep on all sides except for the western side, and has an extensive, nearly flat top.
Strong fortification walls have surrounded the summit of the Acropolis for more than 3,300 years. The first fortification wall was built during the 13th century BC, and surrounded the residence of the local Mycenaean ruler. In the 8th century BC, the Acropolis gradually acquired a religious character with the establishment of the cult of Athena, the city’s patron goddess.

The sanctuary reached its peak in the archaic period (mid-6th century to early 5th century BC). In the 5th century BC, the Athenians, empowered from their victory over the Persians, carried out an ambitious building programme under the leadership of the great statesman Perikles, comprising a large number of monuments including the Parthenon, the Erechtheion, the Propylaia and the temple of Athena Nike.
The monuments were developed by an exceptional group of architects (such as Iktinos, Kallikrates, Mnesikles) and sculptors (such as Pheidias, Alkamenes, Agorakritos), who transformed the rocky hill into a unique complex, which heralded the emergence of classical Greek thought and art.
On this hill were born Democracy, Philosophy, Theatre, Freedom of Expression and Speech, which provide to this day the intellectual and spiritual foundation for the contemporary world and its values.

The Acropolis’ monuments, having survived for almost twenty-five centuries through wars, explosions, bombardments, fires, earthquakes, sackings, interventions and alterations, have adapted to different uses and the civilizations, myths and religions that flourished in Greece through time.

The Foundation was magnificent and equal to the rest of the imperial monasteries of the Komnenian Family (Monastery of Chora Pantokratoros Christou). The founder Isaac Komnenos initially builds the Catholicon. He supervises the works himself. Its architectural type is cruciform with a dome, in a – very rare – variation of the dikionion. The Grammar of Michael gives the church the magnificence that befits it. The church, although of moderate volume, becomes imposing thanks to the impressive height that the architect offers it, along with the particularly large dome, the wise proportions of the dimensions, the lack of colonnades. The work arouses the admiration, not only of its contemporaries, but also of today’s scholars.
The hagiographers who arrive from Vasilevousa depict the divine life of the Virgin Mary and Christ with the masterful style of the Constantinople School. Of the hagiographies that have survived to this day, those in the center of the church stand out. These are untitled hagiographies of four military saints, who have been identified with figures from the Komnenian family, including the founder. The sparkling marble of the floor, the columns, the iconostasis, as well as the gold plating illuminate the interior of the church along with the multitude of windows. The church of Panagia Kosmosotiras becomes resplendent and the founder imprints in the Typikon the command that it be preserved as such throughout the centuries.

See
The Christmas tale coming alive / numerous white and coloured Christmas lights giving the appearance of starlit skies over cities, towns, and villages / the happy and welcoming faces of their inhabitants/ decorated Christmas trees and traditional Christmas boats bringing back memories of childhood Christmases to locals and visitors alike / white picturesque villages and snow-covered mountain tops with busy ski centres/ cheerful fires blazing in traditional hotel fireplaces / fireworks lighting up the night sky on New Year’s Eve/ the custom of Momogeroi, still followed in the areas of Macedonia and Thrace / Athens and Thessaloniki welcoming the Christmas season in high spirits, with the streets and squares wearing colourful Christmas lighting and a variety of events, festivals and concerts. The custom: In Florina, the local celebrations for Christmas and New Year’s Day include the lighting of bonfires at midnight, in the same way as shepherds did to warm up the newborn baby Jesus.
Taste
The savoury and sweet traditional dishes prepared for Christmas and New Year’s Day in Greece / the delicious turkey stuffed with chestnuts and raisins laid on the festive table/ sweet Christmas temptations like traditional melomakarona (honeyed cookies with walnuts), sweet-smelling kourabiedes (christmas butter cookies dusted with caster sugar) and delicious diples (sweet fried honey rolls dusted with cinnamon and ground walnuts) / fragrant stuffed tsourekia (a traditional sweet bread) prepared in confectioneries, mostly in Athens and Thessaloniki / the delicious chicken soup served steaming hot – popular in Crete and other parts of the country / the custom of gourounochara / St. Basil’s Pie (Vasilopita) prepared for New Year’s Day / other traditional local Christmas delicacies served across the country. The custom: Christopsomo (meaning Christ’s bread), customarily prepared in Crete and other areas is a special sweet bread with a cross-shaped decoration and a walnut (the symbol of fertility) at its centre, served on Christmas Day across Greece. It usually contains cinnamon, honey, nutmeg and/or raisins, with slight variations. Tasting it is a …must!
Smell
The festive aromas in the atmosphere/ the warm scent of cinnamon, honey, nuts and sugar- the basic ingredients for the majority of Christmas sweets/ smoking chimneys and wood burning fireplaces in beautiful mountain villages, such as Megalo Papigo in the area of Ioannina/ the scent coming off the moist soil and the dewy evergreen shrubs and trees on forested Mt. Pelion in Magnesia/the smell of incense burning in churches in every city, town, or village / the sweet aroma of chestnuts roasting on an open fire/ delicious smells coming from the kitchens of cute little tavernas in Plaka or Psirri, Athens. The custom: On Kefalonia island, in the Ionian Sea, locals keep a “fragrant” custom called kolonies (meaning colognes); this is a special ritual for New Year’s Eve when people sprinkle each other with cologne and perfume.

According to tradition, opening your door to children singing carols will bring you good luck and prosperity!
Touch / Sense
Visit the impressive fir forest in Pertouli, Trikala, and touch real fir trees instead of their man-made Christmas counterparts / sprigs of Christmas mistletoe set with a red ribbon in vases, or adorning the front doors of houses / the beautiful Christmas ornaments in shops and malls in Athens/ the festive nightlife atmosphere in Arachova, on the south slope of Mt. Parnassus / the special vibes of the ancient oracle at Delphi, just 8 Km away from Arachova / the happy atmosphere you share with family & loved ones / touching the hand of a loved one at midnight on New Year’s Eve. The custom: On New Year’s Day, just after the morning mass, Greeks throw a pomegranate on the doorstep before entering their houses, for good luck; the fruit’s bright red arils get scattered on the floor, and they are believed to bring prosperity, happiness and good fortune to all the family.
